Tarique Rahman’s India Visit Could Focus on Bilateral Ties

India has invited Rahman for a bilateral visit, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressing his willingness to work with his Bangladeshi counterpart to strengthen relations between the two countries.

The proposed visit comes at a sensitive time in India-Bangladesh relations. Dhaka has been seeking India’s cooperation over the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh in 2024.

Bangladesh has also expressed concern over recent political activities involving Hasina in India. Dhaka has said that a conducive environment is needed before Rahman’s proposed visit can take place.

India, meanwhile, has said that it is reviewing Bangladesh’s extradition request according to established legal procedures. The issue is expected to remain an important part of bilateral discussions.

The two sides are also likely to discuss trade, energy cooperation, connectivity, water-sharing issues and other matters concerning bilateral relations.
