Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan, he said this step is essential to legally protect the reservations from judicial review, especially with the matter currently pending in the Supreme Court.

He called for a united political effort from Telangana to secure this constitutional safeguard for Backward Classes.

VHR recalled that Rahul Gandhi, during his padayatra, had clearly promised to provide special reservations for BCs.

He also noted that after Congress came to power in Telangana, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy worked tirelessly to implement BC reservations. However, with the issue now facing legal challenges in the apex court, he said the onus is on the Centre to act.

Therefore, he urged the central government to recognize the aspirations of the people of Telangana and move the bill forward.

He appealed to all political parties to speak in one voice on this issue and make a collective representation. Specifically, he called upon BJP leaders and MPs from the state to take the matter up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ensure BC reservations are implemented smoothly in Telangana.

He said a united front from the state’s political leadership would send a strong message to the Centre and expedite the process.

To illustrate his point about the power of political will, V. Hanumantha Rao shared a past experience.

He said that when he had requested Sonia Gandhi for an IIT and IIM for the region in the past, the institutions were approved and implemented. He used this example to argue that if the state’s BJP leadership makes a sincere effort with the Prime Minister, a positive outcome on the BC Reservation Bill is achievable.

The senior leader’s demand comes at a critical time, with local body elections and other policy decisions hinging on the final status of BC reservations.

By seeking 9th Schedule protection, he is advocating for a mechanism that would place the reservation policy beyond the scope of most court challenges, thereby providing a durable solution.

He reiterated his appeal for cross-party unity to achieve this long-standing demand for the state’s Backward Classes. (Maxim News)
