Hyderabad, July 11, 2025 — Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka launched a scathing attack on newly appointed Telangana BJP President Ramchander Rao, holding him responsible for the suicide of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) PhD scholar Rohith Vemula. Addressing media on Friday, Bhatti questioned the BJP’s decision to elevate Rao despite his alleged role in the 2016 incident that triggered nationwide outrage.
“How can someone who played a role in the institutional harassment of Rohith Vemula be rewarded with the BJP State President post?” Bhatti asked, calling it a grave injustice to Dalit communities and demanding a public apology from the BJP high command.
Congress Government to Introduce ‘Rohith Vemula Act’
Bhatti Vikramarka announced that the Telangana Congress government is preparing legislation to prevent institutional discrimination in higher education. Dubbed the “Rohith Vemula Act”, the proposed law aims to protect marginalized students from caste-based harassment. He confirmed that the law department is actively working on the bill.
Criticism of BJP’s Appointments
Bhatti condemned the BJP for allegedly rewarding individuals linked to the tragic episode:
- Bandaru Dattatreya, accused of pressuring HCU to act against Rohith, was appointed Governor.
- Sushil Kumar, an ABVP leader named in the case, is now an Assistant Professor at Delhi University.
- Ramchander Rao, who had staged protests demanding action against Rohith, has been made the Telangana BJP President.
“The BJP is making Dalits and Adivasis feel unsafe. Their actions are against the spirit of the Constitution,” Bhatti said.
Accusations Against Former CM KCR
The Deputy CM also took aim at former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), stating he never visited Rohith’s family after the tragedy and showed no commitment toward improving conditions in state universities.
Constitutional Responsibility & Social Justice
Bhatti Vikramarka reiterated that the central government must uphold the constitutional rights of every citizen, especially marginalized communities. He accused the BJP of disregarding social justice and promoting individuals with anti-Dalit histories.
“Oppressed communities have suffered for centuries. We must ensure such tragedies never repeat,” he concluded.
