Bibi ka Alam Elephant Arrives In Hyderabad A Day Before Ashura
Hyderabad, July 5 (Maxim News): With just one day to go for Ashura, the historic Bibi ka Alam procession in Hyderabad is set to maintain its centuries-old tradition. Laxmi, a trained elephant from Tumkur, Karnataka, arrived in the city on Saturday to carry the revered alam on Sunday, July 6, during the solemn Muharram procession.
This year’s arrival came after some uncertainty, as the Telangana Forest Department earlier denied permission for an elephant from Delhi, citing logistical concerns. However, Laxmi’s arrival now assures that the long-standing custom of carrying the alam on elephant-back will continue.
The Bibi ka Alam, which commemorates Bibi Fatima, the daughter of Prophet Muhammad, is an integral part of Hyderabad’s Ashura rituals. Dating back to the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi dynasties, the procession is one of the most emotionally charged and spiritually significant events of the Islamic calendar in the city.
The alam standard itself is made from six black velvet pouches filled with precious stones including diamonds, rubies, and emeralds — gifts originally offered by the 4th Nizam and later enriched by the 7th Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan.
Each year, the procession begins from Bibi ka Alawa in Dabeerpura and weaves through key parts of Hyderabad’s Old City before concluding at Chaderghat. The elephant, always a central figure, is selected after rigorous trials to ensure it can handle large crowds, drum beats, and the emotionally intense atmosphere.
Some of the most notable elephants to have carried the alam in the past include Hyderi, Rajani, Madhuri, and Hashmi. Laxmi’s health clearance and documentation were verified and approved by the Karnataka and Telangana governments, ensuring her participation complies with all animal welfare norms.
Traditionally, the elephant arrives four to five days before the procession to undergo trial runs. With just hours remaining this year, it remains uncertain if Laxmi will be taken for a test walk before the main event.
Thousands of mourners are expected to join the Ashura procession, which is considered one of the most significant Muharram events in India, marked by deep devotion and historical reverence.
