Big Win for Telangana: CM Revanth, Uttam Secure Key Decisions on Krishna, Godavari Water Sharing in Talks with Centre, Andhra
Hyderabad/New Delhi, July 16 (Maxim News): In a significant breakthrough for Telangana, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy achieved a major diplomatic and administrative victory in New Delhi during high-level talks with their Andhra Pradesh counterparts and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil.
The meeting, aimed at resolving long-pending inter-state water issues, resulted in four major decisions—marking a shift toward transparency and cooperation in managing Krishna and Godavari rivers. The talks were held in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with Congress MPs including Dr. Mallu Ravi and Abhishek Manu Singhvi also in attendance.
Key Decisions from the Telangana-Andhra-Centre Water Talks
1. Telemetry Instruments on Krishna River to Ensure Transparency
One of the most significant outcomes was the approval to install telemetry instruments at every off-take point on the Krishna River and its canal system, ensuring real-time monitoring of water usage. Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy noted that this demand was strongly pushed by the Telangana side to address long-standing disputes over unequal distribution and monitoring.
“This is a historic decision. The Krishna River has been a point of contention for decades. With telemetry, we now move toward a scientific and transparent monitoring system,” he said.
Telangana also committed to funding the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) for completing the telemetry installation.
2. Centre Directs Urgent Repairs of Srisailam Dam
The Centre has ordered Andhra Pradesh to undertake immediate repairs of the aging Srisailam Dam, following concerns raised by Telangana and the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) about structural weaknesses, especially in the plunge pool area.
Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized that the dam’s maintenance was Andhra’s responsibility and welcomed the Centre’s directive to act immediately to avoid potential disasters.
3. River Management Boards Location Finalized
A longstanding point of administrative deadlock has now been resolved. As per the earlier Apex Council 2020 agreement and the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, it was confirmed that:
- Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) will be located in Telangana
- Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) will be located in Andhra Pradesh
This decision was described as a “ratification of an earlier consensus” by the Telangana delegation.

4. Joint Committee to Resolve Pending Issues
A joint committee of senior officials, engineers, and subject experts from both states will be formed in the next week. This committee will have 30 days to propose solutions on unresolved matters, including water allocation and project approvals on both Krishna and Godavari rivers.
CM Revanth: “This Is a Major Victory for Telangana”
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy hailed the outcome as a milestone in Telangana’s fight for equitable water access. He reiterated Telangana’s readiness to stand firm in case of any future disputes.
“We are prepared to fight from ‘Sadak to Sansad’ for Telangana’s water rights,” he stated, while expressing satisfaction over the Centre’s cooperation in moving discussions forward.
Revanth also clarified that the Banakacherla issue was not discussed during this meeting, as it was not a formal Apex Council session, but a preparatory and facilitative discussion.
