BIS Raids Secunderabad Jewellery Store Over Hallmarking Violations

BIS Raids Secunderabad Jewellery | Hyderabad, July 10 (Maxim News): The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid on a jewellery store in Pot Market, Secunderabad, on Friday and seized a large quantity of gold ornaments for allegedly violating mandatory hallmarking norms under the BIS Act, 2016.

Officials said the enforcement action was taken after the store was found selling gold jewellery without the mandatory BIS hallmark.

The search and seizure operation was carried out by the BIS Hyderabad Branch Office as part of its ongoing drive against hallmarking violations. BIS officials have initiated legal proceedings against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.

The enforcement team was led by Deputy Directors Kavin K and Vijayraj Barbar. During the inspection, officials found several gold jewellery items being offered for sale without the mandatory BIS Hallmark and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID).

The seized stock included 34 gold rings weighing 164.26 grams, 27 necklaces weighing 797.07 grams, six bangles weighing 57.03 grams, 17 chains weighing 412.72 grams, and 27 pairs of earrings weighing 122.86 grams.

According to BIS, selling gold jewellery without the prescribed hallmark violates the hallmarking regulations notified by the Government of India. The agency said such enforcement drives are aimed at protecting consumers, ensuring quality standards and improving transparency in the jewellery market.

BIS advised consumers to purchase only hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the mandatory BIS logo, purity mark, six digit alphanumeric HUID number and the jeweller’s identification mark. Buyers can verify the authenticity of the hallmark by entering the HUID number through the BIS CARE mobile application before making a purchase.

The standards body also urged customers to insist on proper purchase invoices and report any instances of fake or missing hallmarking. Complaints regarding misuse of BIS hallmarking or sale of jewellery without HUID can be submitted through the BIS CARE mobile app.

Officials said BIS will continue market surveillance and enforcement operations across Telangana to ensure compliance with hallmarking regulations and safeguard consumer interests.
