Mumbai: A bomb threat targeting Mumbai’s iconic Taj Hotel triggered a major security alert early Sunday, with police and bomb disposal teams conducting an extensive search before declaring the threat a hoax.
According to police, at around 12:13 a.m., an unidentified caller contacted the Navi Mumbai Police Control Room and claimed that “Dawood has planted a bomb at the Taj Hotel.” The information was immediately passed on to the Mumbai Police Control Room, prompting a swift security response.
Bomb Disposal Squad Conducts Extensive Search
Teams from the Colaba Police, Crime Branch, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) rushed to the Taj Hotel in Colaba and carried out a thorough inspection.
Security personnel searched the hotel’s main lobby, banquet halls, restaurants, swimming pool, parking area, outer premises, and other sensitive locations. After an exhaustive search, officials confirmed that no suspicious object or explosive material was found.
Police subsequently declared the bomb threat to be a hoax.
Caller Being Traced
Preliminary technical investigation revealed that the threatening call originated from the Turbhe area of Navi Mumbai.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest the caller using the mobile number from which the threat was made. Mumbai Police are coordinating with Turbhe Police to trace the suspect.
Second Hoax Threat in Two Days
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was one of the main targets during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, in which 166 people were killed and hundreds were injured.
The incident comes a day after another hoax bomb threat prompted a massive security operation at Delhi’s Red Fort. That threat, which was also communicated through the Mumbai Police Control Room, was later found to be false after security agencies completed a comprehensive search of the historic monument.
Police have appealed to the public not to spread rumours and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those making fake bomb threat calls.
