Hyderabad, April 15: Bharat Rashtra Samithi will support the Women’s Reservation Bill. However, it opposes any delimitation that reduces southern States’ share. The decision was taken ahead of the special Parliament session from April 16 to 18.
Party chief K Chandrashekhar Rao held a meeting at his residence. Senior leaders including K. T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao attended the discussion. The leadership reviewed the party’s stand on key national issues.
Sources said BRS MPs in the Rajya Sabha will support the Women’s Reservation Bill. The party earlier passed a resolution in Telangana Assembly backing women’s quota. It also implemented reservations for women in local bodies.
BRS backs Women’s Reservation Bill, flags delimitation concerns
However, the party remains cautious on delimitation proposals. It has clearly opposed any move that harms southern States. Therefore, it will study the bill before taking a final position.
K Chandrashekhar Rao expressed concern over using the 2011 Census for delimitation. He warned that it could reduce southern States’ representation in Parliament. Currently, the region holds about 24 percent of Lok Sabha seats.
He argued that this share should not decline. Instead, representation should increase given the region’s development contribution. Moreover, he stressed that population control efforts must be considered.
The party indicated it will oppose any reduction in southern representation. At the same time, it may support seat expansion if shares remain unchanged. Thus, its final stand will depend on the bill’s provisions.
The leadership also reviewed plans for a public meeting in Jagtial on April 20. It discussed Formation Day celebrations scheduled for April 27.
