Hyderabad, June 28: Several Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders and a few Youth Congress leaders were detained in Nalgonda district ahead of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s scheduled visit on Sunday.
Police carried out detentions at multiple locations across the erstwhile Nalgonda district amid concerns over planned protests during the Chief Minister’s programmes.
Among those detained were BRS corporator Kandaru Praveen Reddy from the sixth division, 24th division corporator G Rajashekhar Goud, BRS Minority youth wing president Owais Shah, Mohd Qasim, Beri Nagaraju and several others.
The BRS Students wing had earlier announced plans to obstruct the Chief Minister’s visit in protest against what it described as the Congress government’s failure to fulfil commitments made to youth, particularly on job notifications.
According to reports, Miryalguda II Town Police took several BRSV leaders into preventive custody at around 4 am on Sunday.
Municipal Floor Leader Iliyas Khan and BRSV State Secretary Mohd Shoaib criticised the government and alleged that opposition leaders were being targeted despite claims of protecting democratic values.
In a separate development in Munugode, police also detained Youth Congress leader Jangili Nagaraju early in the morning.
Reports said police acted after receiving information that some Youth Congress leaders planned to stage protests with placards during the Chief Minister’s events over the non inclusion of Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy in the State cabinet.
Officials have not issued any detailed statement regarding the detentions.
