Washington, June 28: The United States (US) carried out additional military strikes on Iranian targets after Washington accused Tehran of launching another drone attack on a commercial oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the action followed an alleged one way drone strike on the Panama flagged tanker M/T Kiku while it was transiting near the strategic waterway carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil.
CENTCOM said the latest operation was conducted at the direction of the US President after Iran allegedly failed to adhere to a ceasefire understanding reached after earlier hostilities.
US Iran Tensions Rise After Strait of Hormuz Incident
US military aircraft targeted surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence positions, drone storage facilities and capabilities linked to maritime operations, according to CENTCOM.
The US military also stated that fighter aircraft struck multiple Iranian military targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz following the reported tanker attack.
The latest developments mark another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran and raise concerns over the stability of maritime trade routes in the Gulf region.
Despite the military activity, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues, while US forces remain deployed to monitor maritime security in the region, CENTCOM said.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors and handles a major share of global crude oil exports, making disruptions a significant concern for international markets.
