New Delhi, August 5: The Centre is making efforts to resolve disruptions in Parliament as the Monsoon Session continues to face repeated protests, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju meeting Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday.
The meeting took place after the Lok Sabha was adjourned shortly after proceedings began due to opposition slogans. Rijiju met Rahul Gandhi in his Parliament chamber for around 50 minutes.
Centre Seeks Consensus on Parliament Functioning
Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi and other senior MPs also attended the meeting. Discussions reportedly focused on the Delimitation Bill and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill.
However, sources said Rahul Gandhi did not agree to the Centre’s request to ensure smooth functioning of the House. He reportedly stated that opposition protests would continue until issues raised by the party are addressed.
According to sources, the opposition has sought a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on allegations related to donations at the Ayodhya Ram temple and the police action against students during protests in Delhi on July 20.
After meeting Rahul Gandhi, Rijiju held discussions with Home Minister Amit Shah. The Minister is also expected to meet other opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, as part of efforts to reduce the deadlock.
The Monsoon Session began on July 20 and has witnessed repeated disruptions. Question Hour has not been conducted so far due to protests, according to reports.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed concern over members entering the well of the House with placards and appealed to MPs to maintain parliamentary dignity.
Meanwhile, five key bills have been passed amid disruptions without detailed discussions. Reports also suggested that the Centre is considering special Parliament sittings later this month to discuss important legislative matters, including the Delimitation Bill.
