Champions Trophy 2025: Criticism Mounts as Siraj is Left Out of Squad
Hyderabad, Feb 12 (Maxim News): Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy due to ongoing recovery from his back injury. As a result, young fast bowler Harshit Rana has been called up to replace him.
In a surprising move, the management has also opted to include Varun Chakravarthy in the squad, replacing opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. This decision has left many fans disheartened, especially with the exclusion of senior pacer Mohammed Siraj, who was named as a non-travel reserve instead of being included in the main squad.
Fans have voiced their disappointment, pointing out that Siraj, who has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers for India since 2022, should not have been sidelined. Notably, he was ranked as the top ODI bowler in January 2023, and many felt he deserved a spot in the squad, especially given Bumrah’s absence and Shami’s ongoing struggles with form.
A few fans expressed their frustration on social media: “With Bumrah out and Shami not yet at his best, why bring in a young player like Harshit Rana? Siraj, a proven match-winner, should have been on the team. Unfortunately, he’s been overlooked.”
There was also criticism directed at the Indian head coach, with some alleging that decisions were being made unilaterally and with bias, particularly in favor of players from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The inclusion of Harshit Rana over Siraj and Varun Chakravarthy over Yashasvi Jaiswal raised eyebrows among many.
“Five spinners in the squad? Didn’t anyone think about this carefully? Instead of one of those spinners, Siraj should have been picked. And leaving out Yashasvi Jaiswal is questionable. He could have easily been included in place of Sundar.”
The decisions have sparked a wider debate about team selection and fairness, with fans hoping that Indian cricket’s leadership will consider these concerns moving forward. (Maxim News)
