Hyderabad: China Advises Iran Not to Close Hormuz amid rising tensions in West Asia. Beijing has reportedly urged Tehran not to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In particular, China advised Iran not to target oil and LNG exports from Qatar, Bloomberg reported.
China buys the majority of Iran’s oil. However, China also relies heavily on the Persian Gulf region for its overall energy needs. Therefore, stability in the Strait of Hormuz remains crucial for Beijing. Qatar accounts for about a fifth of the world’s LNG supply. Meanwhile, China imports about 30 percent of its LNG imports from Qatar. Any disruption, therefore, could affect energy supplies across Asia.
Tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has slowed down due to US-Israeli attacks and Iranian counter attacks. As a result, Asian countries have started looking for alternative energy sources. However, the situation remains tense as shipping movements continue to face uncertainty.
China announced that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about the situation. During the discussion, Wang Yi suggested that the concerns of neighboring countries be taken into account. This conversation came as tensions escalated in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil and LNG shipments. Therefore, any move to close or disrupt it could impact global markets. China’s advice reflects its broader energy dependence on the Persian Gulf region. At the same time, Beijing’s communication with Tehran shows diplomatic engagement during the ongoing crisis.
The developments come as West Asia faces increasing military and political strain. Meanwhile, countries dependent on oil and LNG imports continue to monitor the situation closely.
