CM Revanth Reddy Meets Union Minister CR Patil, Urges Centre to Halt Godavari-Banakacharla Project

Delhi/Hyderabad, June 19 (Maxim News): In a significant political development, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met Union Minister CR Patil in Delhi today to press for the immediate stoppage of the Godavari-Banakacharla linkage project. The Telangana delegation, which included senior officials and MPs Mallu Ravi and Raghuveer Reddy, urged the Centre to reject the project’s feasibility and detailed project reports.

Telangana’s Opposition to the Project

The Telangana government has consistently opposed the Godavari-Banakacharla project, citing concerns over severe injustice to Telangana’s water rights. During the meeting, CM Revanth Reddy and Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that the project could adversely impact Telangana’s share of river water and agricultural interests.

Minister Uttam had earlier written to the Centre, requesting cancellation of environmental clearances, rejection of the feasibility report, and a halt to the tendering process associated with the project.

All-Party Unity and Legal Preparedness

On June 18, CM Revanth Reddy convened an all-party meeting in Hyderabad, where MPs from various political parties resolved to oppose the project. The Chief Minister stressed that Telangana is ready to fight a legal battle if necessary and will approach the courts to safeguard the state’s interests.

Telangana’s Next Steps

The Telangana government plans to escalate the issue during the upcoming Parliament sessions, seeking meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Environment Minister Bhupendra Patel. The state aims to present its case directly to the Union leadership to block the Banakacharla project.

Centre and AP Government’s Stand

Union Minister Kishan Reddy reportedly sought clarification on the project from the Union Water Resources Ministry. The Centre has indicated that any decision will be taken only after consultations with both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government maintains that the project will utilise only surplus water and will not harm Telangana’s interests. AP leaders insist that necessary approvals will be sought from the Centre before proceeding.
