CM Revanth to Launch New Ration Cards in Tungaturthi on July 14: Uttam Kumar Reddy
Hyderabad: In a major welfare initiative aimed at advancing food security and social justice, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will launch the distribution of 5 lakh new white ration cards at a massive public meeting in Tirumalagiri, Tungaturthi constituency, on July 14. The programme, set to benefit 3.10 crore people across 94.72 lakh families, will be attended by Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and several cabinet ministers.
Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, addressing a preparatory meeting on Friday, described the ration card rollout as a historic milestone and a fulfilment of the Congress government’s promise to provide 6 kg of fine rice per person per month free of cost to all eligible families.
“This is not an election gimmick. Ration cards will now be issued through a continuous administrative process—unlike the BRS regime which ignored poor families for ten years,” said Uttam Kumar Reddy.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
- 5 lakh new ration cards to be distributed in the first phase.
- 3.10 crore beneficiaries to receive high-quality, free fine rice.
- ₹13,000 crore allocated annually to procure and distribute rice.
- ₹500 per quintal bonus to farmers cultivating fine rice.
- Telangana tops the country with 281 lakh metric tonnes in grain production.
Social Justice Milestones
Uttam also hailed the 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections as a landmark in Indian democracy, noting that Telangana is the first state in a century to conduct a comprehensive caste census, involving over 1.04 lakh enumerators. He reiterated that the ordinance for BC quota would reflect in upcoming local polls and job notifications.
“No other state has implemented such strong and data-backed measures for BC empowerment,” he said, challenging other states to match Telangana’s pace in delivering justice to backward communities.
He further added that the Congress party’s commitment to SC categorisation and empowering marginalised groups was now being reflected through legislation, governance, and upcoming recruitment drives.
Political and Historical Significance
Calling the Tungaturthi launch symbolic, Uttam said the area is “a land of freedom fighters and armed struggle heroes.” He assured that Tungaturthi would witness unprecedented development, including integrated schools, colleges, and irrigation infrastructure.
He credited Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her vision through the National Food Security Act, stating that this scheme builds on her legacy.
Earlier, Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar, visited senior Congress leader Ramreddy Damodar Reddy to check on his health. He also chaired a review meeting with local Congress leaders, urging full mobilisation of party cadres for the July 14 event.
“This ration card drive will be remembered as a turning point in independent India’s welfare journey,” he concluded.
