Hyderabad: Hyderabad is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave, with record-low temperatures marking a significant deviation from the city’s typical winter weather patterns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad issued a yellow alert for the Bandlaguda area on Tuesday, December 17, signaling unusually cold conditions.

Record-Low Temperatures Across Telangana

On Monday night, the Adilabad district recorded the state’s lowest temperature at a frigid 5.9°C, followed by Sangareddy and Nirmal at 6.7°C, and Patancheru near Hyderabad at 6.4°C. Within the city, Rajendranagar recorded a chilly 8.5°C.

Out of Telangana’s 33 districts, 25 reported minimum temperatures below 10°C on Monday night, according to IMD Hyderabad’s weather report, highlighting the widespread impact of the cold wave.

Chilly Nights, Warm Days

Hyderabad is experiencing an unusual weather pattern this winter with frigid nights and unseasonably warm days. While night-time temperatures have plunged to record lows, daytime temperatures remain unusually high, hovering around 30°C in many parts of the city, according to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).

This stark temperature contrast has left residents struggling to adjust to the fluctuating conditions. Nights bring biting cold, with temperatures frequently dropping below 10°C in several areas, while the daytime heat feels almost summer-like.

Severe Cold Wave Hits Key Areas

The sharpest temperature drops have been reported in Serilingampally Mandal, Balapur, and Ibrahimpatnam, where the mercury fell to a chilling 7.8°C on Monday night. The University of Hyderabad campus also experienced significant cold, making it one of the coldest spots in the city.

This rare phenomenon of warm days and icy nights has left Hyderabadis bracing for an unpredictable winter. Authorities urge residents to take precautions, especially during the night, as the cold wave continues to sweep through the city.
