Country Chicken Price | Hyderabad, Oct 20 (Maxim News): Country chicken (naatu kodi) prices have jumped during Dussehra in the Telugu states, with a kilo selling at about the same rate as mutton. Non-vegetarian buyers are still paying up for the festival, according to market reports.
In Srikakulam district, country chicken sales have been brisk for the past 10 days at weekly markets in Budumuru, Narayanavalasa, Kollivalasa, Kojjiri, Amparam, Mandasa, Ambugam, Pond, Palakonda and Seethampeta.

A kilo of mutton sells at about ₹1,000 there, and country chicken is selling at the same rate. Depending on size, a single country hen or cock is going for ₹1,000 to ₹2,000.
Buyers say demand has risen because sheep and goat prices are above ₹10,000 each. It is a custom to offer chickens and goats to the goddess on Vijayadashami, and many are choosing country chicken instead. Broiler chicken is cheaper, but buyers prefer country chicken for offerings and for cooking at home.

Some traders are reportedly passing off cheaper Giriraja birds as country chicken, taking advantage of the demand. The two look alike, but Giriraja birds sell at about ₹500 a kilo, while country chicken costs more than ₹1,000, the report says.
