New Delhi, Oct. 21: The Delhi High Court questioned student-led protests without police permission while hearing a petition by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
The court referred to protests in France and expressed concerns about violence, looting and possible disruptions. It stressed the importance of obtaining prior police permission for demonstrations.
The bench made these observations while hearing the leaders’ petition challenging the extension of their judicial custody. Their custody was due to end on Wednesday.
Delhi High Court Questions Protest at Jantar Mantar
The High Court questioned why the leaders went to Jantar Mantar after authorities had withdrawn its status as a designated protest venue.
The court observed that barricades serve a purpose and should not be removed without considering the consequences. It warned that unauthorised protests could allow other groups to join and create disturbances.

The bench also said governments frame rules to prevent outside forces from joining student protests. It expressed concern that such groups could exploit demonstrations to cause unrest.
During the hearing, the court also questioned the leaders over hoisting the national flag at Jantar Mantar despite prohibitory orders.
The bench noted that Saurav Das was 27 and Ashutosh Ranka was 32. It remarked that Ranka did not belong to Generation Z, which it described as comprising people born after 1997.
The High Court subsequently dismissed their petition challenging the extension of their judicial custody.
