New Delhi, August 5: The Centre is reportedly planning to convene a special session of Parliament later this month to introduce the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Bill after the conclusion of the ongoing Monsoon Session.
According to sources, the proposed special session may be held from August 16 to 18. The current Monsoon Session is scheduled to conclude on August 13.
The Centre is expected to table the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Bill during the proposed three day session. As both are constitutional amendment bills, they require a two thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament for passage.
The Union government has reportedly begun reaching out to political parties to seek support for the proposed legislation.
As part of these efforts, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday. The meeting reportedly covered the proposed bills and the ongoing disruption in Parliament.
According to sources, Rijiju sought the Congress party’s support for the Delimitation Bill and the Women’s Reservation Bill. Rahul Gandhi is also reported to have conveyed the opposition’s stand on the current parliamentary deadlock, stating that the demand was for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged police action against students during recent protests.
The Centre is also expected to hold discussions with leaders of other opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, as it seeks wider political consensus on the proposed bills.
An official announcement on the special Parliament session is awaited.
