Internet, August 2: US President Donald Trump announced that he has cancelled a planned large-scale military strike on Iran, claiming that negotiations have reached the “parameters of a deal” and expressing hope for a swift agreement to ease regional tensions.
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Saturday, Trump said he decided to halt the proposed military action after receiving requests from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries to delay the attack. He said the understanding reached in the negotiations could pave the way for an agreement if finalized quickly.
The announcement came a day after reports in US media suggested that Washington and Israel were preparing coordinated strikes targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Trump stated that the proposed agreement would result in the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat. However, he did not provide details of the reported negotiations or identify the countries involved in the discussions.
Iran did not immediately respond to Trump’s statement. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Saudi counterpart that any military action by the United States or Israel would receive a “proportionate response,” according to Iranian media reports.
Meanwhile, US news outlet Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally urged Trump to abandon the planned strikes and return to diplomatic negotiations. The report, citing a source familiar with the matter, said the Saudi leadership warned that military escalation could further destabilize the region.
Trump had earlier warned on Friday that the United States would respond forcefully against Iran, stating that Washington was prepared to act “very hard” if necessary.
As regional tensions continued, the US Department of State issued security alerts for American citizens in 10 countries across the Middle East. The advisory urged Americans to exercise increased caution and consider leaving affected areas due to the possibility of further escalation.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, with a significant share of global oil exports passing through the narrow waterway. Any disruption in the region has the potential to affect global energy markets and international shipping.
While Trump’s announcement has temporarily eased fears of immediate military action, uncertainty remains over whether the reported diplomatic breakthrough will lead to a formal agreement between Washington and Tehran.
