Jangaon, July 10: An intoxicated man allegedly stole an RTC hire service bus from the Jangaon bus stand and drove it nearly 21 kilometres before being stopped at the Singarajupalli toll plaza after crashing into a cement barrier.
According to officials, the accused, identified as Venkanna, a resident of Palakurthi, took advantage of a lapse in security at the RTC depot on Thursday night and drove away with the parked bus towards Suryapet.
After travelling around 21 kilometres, Venkanna reached the Singarajupalli toll plaza in the early hours of Friday. Unable to manoeuvre the bus through the toll lane, he repeatedly rammed it into a cement block after losing control of the vehicle.
Toll plaza staff, noticing the unusual behaviour of the driver, immediately stopped the bus and alerted the local police.
Police reached the spot, seized the bus, and detained Venkanna for questioning.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted that he had taken the bus while under the influence of alcohol and claimed that he only wanted to take it for a “test drive.”
Officials said there were no injuries or casualties in the incident despite the reckless driving and collision at the toll plaza.
The police have registered a case against Venkanna and launched an investigation into how the bus was removed from the depot without authorisation.
