Beijing/Hyderabad, July 15 (Maxim News): In a significant diplomatic engagement, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday to discuss the current trajectory and future prospects of India-China bilateral relations. This meeting marks a crucial step in efforts to stabilize and strengthen ties between the two Asian giants.
The interaction took place during the call on President Xi by foreign ministers participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, currently underway in China.
Sharing details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar wrote: “Called on President Xi Jinping this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard.”
This visit marks Jaishankar’s first trip to China since the Galwan Valley clash in 2020 and comes amid ongoing efforts to rebuild trust and normalize engagement across multiple levels.
During his stay, Jaishankar held a series of high-level talks, including a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party of China’s (CPC) Political Bureau. Discussions focused on a long-term framework for improving ties, resolving lingering border tensions, and addressing trade-related issues.
“We must address issues related to the boundary, normalize people-to-people exchanges, and remove restrictive trade practices. On the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, our ties can evolve positively,” Jaishankar stated in a separate post.
The External Affairs Minister also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, reiterating that a stable and constructive India-China relationship can bring mutually beneficial outcomes, especially in the context of today’s complex global challenges.
Additionally, Jaishankar held a strategic meeting with Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party (IDCPC), where both sides acknowledged the importance of a constructive and forward-looking partnership between the two nations.
With both India and China playing pivotal roles in global politics and the economy, Jaishankar emphasized that continued dialogue, based on mutual respect and open communication, is essential to navigating the current geopolitical climate.
The meetings held during the SCO Summit underscore India’s intent to re-engage China through multilateral platforms and bilateral dialogues, while continuing to uphold national interests and regional security.
