EC Is Proceeding As Per The Constitution On Bihar Vote: Supreme Court
Delhi/internet Dest/Hyderabad, July 10 (Maxim News): With the assembly elections approaching, the Election Commission of India’s decision to conduct a Special Comprehensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is becoming controversial in Bihar politics.
The opposition parties have approached the Supreme Court regarding this, but they have faced a setback. The Supreme Court has upheld the EC’s action. It has been noted that this is a process taking place by the Constitution. However, it has questioned its conduct before the elections (Bihar Assembly Elections).
The voter list was purged almost 20 years ago. Although there is a need to make amendments again in this process, there is some opposition to the timing chosen by the Election Commission. The choice of Bihar, which is due to hold assembly elections in a few months, is drawing criticism.
The Congress-led India Bloc has alleged that the ECI is implementing this strategy at the behest of the Center to exclude Muslims, migrant workers and Dalits from the voter list. An NGO called the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the ECI’s decision and a hearing was held recently. (Maxim News)
