New Delhi, Sept. 23: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rejected a report claiming that two Election Commissioners recorded dissent over decisions taken by the poll panel.
People with direct knowledge of the matter said no Election Commissioner had formally recorded dissent on any decision.
They said the two commissioners had made observations on certain issues. The Commission later examined those observations.
The Election Commission currently comprises Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
ECI Says Decisions, Including SIR, Were Unanimous
The response followed a report by The Indian Express claiming that the two Election Commissioners had objected on record to several decisions over a 10-month period.
According to the report, the issues included electoral roll additions and deletions. It also alleged that the commissioners were not informed about some matters.
ECI sources disputed the characterisation of these observations as dissent. They said decisions taken by the Commission carry the signatures of all three members.
The sources also said decisions relating to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls were unanimous.
The dispute has emerged amid political criticism of the ECI’s SIR exercise. Opposition parties have raised concerns about the possible exclusion of eligible voters.
The ECI has maintained that the revision exercise is intended to improve the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls.
The Election Commission is a constitutional authority responsible for administering elections to Parliament, state legislatures and the offices of the President and Vice President.
