  • Energy efficiency projects highlighted during National Energy Week

Hyderabad: Energy efficiency has emerged as a central pillar of Hyderabad’s climate action strategy, with GHMC Commissioner R. V. The report was prepared by Bureau of Energy Efficiency Media Adviser A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy. It was developed in collaboration with Energy Efficiency Services Limited and the State Designated Agency TSREDCO. The document outlines existing initiatives and future directions aimed at reducing energy consumption while supporting sustainable urban development.

Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner observed that energy efficiency alone contributes over 40 per cent towards addressing climate change. He described it as a global necessity rather than an optional policy choice. He also pointed out that unchecked human activity has led to serious air, water and soil pollution. Therefore, these actions have affected wildlife, human health and sustainable development goals.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of social responsibility in tackling these challenges. He said GHMC is stepping up public awareness initiatives. These campaigns focus not only on energy efficiency and energy conservation, but also on urban cleanliness, waste management and environmental protection. Meanwhile, officials noted that citizen participation remains critical for long term impact.

During the event, the Commissioner appreciated the cool roof pilot project at the University of Hyderabad. TSREDCO implemented the project with financial support from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The pilot covers around 36,746 square feet. It aims to create a climate resilient and energy efficient campus. The project is expected to result in an estimated annual energy saving of 7,000 kilowatt hours.

Meanwhile, with the support of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department of the Telangana government, EESL completed the retrofitting of 5.53 lakh LED street lights in GHMC areas. This forms part of a larger programme covering 15.41 lakh street lights across Telangana. Officials said these measures reduce power use and improve efficiency across the city.

The GHMC reiterated that it remains firmly committed to aligning urban governance with national climate goals. It also aims to follow global best practices and deliver citizen centric sustainability outcomes. The energy efficiency report, officials said, will serve as a guiding document for future climate action efforts in Hyderabad. (Maxim News)
