EVM Glitches And Clashes Mark Jubilee Hills Bypoll
- Technical Issues Disrupt Voting in Multiple Jubilee Hills Booths
- Tensions Rise as Political Clashes and Cash Allegations Surface
The Jubilee Hills by-election saw a heavy voter turnout on Tuesday since polling began at 7 am. However, the day was marred by technical problems and political tensions. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) malfunctioned at 11 polling booths, including Borabanda, Rahmatnagar, Vengalrao Nagar, and Shaikpet, causing delays and disruption. At booth number 348 in Borabanda, polling came to a halt due to an EVM fault, leaving voters stranded in long queues. Similar glitches affected booths 165 and 166 in Rahmatnagar. Reports also indicated delayed voting start times at booths 76 and 78 in Vengalrao Nagar, while in Shaikpet’s booth number 30, polling was delayed by technical issues which were later resolved.
District Election Officer RV Karnan, inspecting polling in Erragadda, confirmed detection and rectification of minor faults at six centers. After fixes, voting proceeded smoothly. BRS candidate Maganti Sunitha voted at booth number 290 in Yellareddyguda and urged citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly.
Political tensions flared throughout the day. Congress leader Baba Fasiuddin allegedly attacked a BRS activist at the Borabanda polling station and prevented workers from assisting voters. Maganti Sunitha condemned the attack and accused police of bias towards Congress. She called on police to remain neutral and ensure fair polling, warning that BRS would no longer remain silent if attacks continued.
Adding to the controversies, non-local Congress MLAs and MLCs, including Government whip Beerla Ailaiah and Congress MLC Shankar Naik, were spotted attempting to influence voters near polling centers in Rahmatnagar division. BRS workers caught a local Congress leader attempting to bribe voters near booth no. 205 in Jawaharnagar, Vengal Rao Nagar, and handed him over to election officials.
Polling will continue until 6 pm, covering 4,01,365 voters across 407 polling stations. The process is closely monitored with webcasting and drone surveillance in 139 sensitive locations. Results are expected on November 14.
