The blaze reportedly began in the battery compartment of the e-bus when the driver attempted to start the vehicle for a scheduled pickup at the Karimnagar main bus stand. Within minutes, thick smoke and flames spread across the vehicle, causing panic among depot staff.

Quick to react, the alert driver immediately halted the vehicle and informed both depot officials and the branch manager of JBM, the private firm operating the electric buses in partnership with TSRTC.

Firefighters Act Swiftly

The depot authorities swiftly contacted the fire department, which dispatched fire tenders to the site. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames before they could spread further, ensuring no injuries or damage to nearby vehicles or infrastructure.

Officials stated that the cause of the fire appears to be a technical malfunction in the battery unit, although a detailed investigation is underway. No passengers were on board at the time, and no casualties were reported.

E-Bus Operations Under Scrutiny

The incident has raised safety concerns about the operation and maintenance of electric buses. Karimnagar currently operates several electric buses through a collaboration between TSRTC and JBM, as part of the state’s green transportation initiative.

Depot authorities have assured that a technical team from JBM will conduct a thorough inspection of all electric buses before they are deployed again. Preventive maintenance and safety checks are being intensified to prevent any recurrence.
