Flood Inflow Surges at Sunkesula Reservoir: 12 Gates Lifted to Release Water to Srisailam
Hyderabad, July 27 (Maxim News) – The flood flow into the Sunkesula reservoir in the Jogulamba Gadwal district has dramatically increased following the heavy water release from the Tungabhadra dam upstream. In response, officials lifted 12 crest gates to manage the surge and safely channel water downstream.
Inflow Peaks at 48,000 Cusecs, 47,800 Cusecs Released
On Sunday, the inflow into Sunkesula reservoir reached 48,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs). To prevent overflow and maintain safety, irrigation authorities opened 12 gates by one metre, releasing 47,800 cusecs of water into the Srisailam reservoir.

According to officials, the current water level at Srisailam stands at 290.60 metres, just shy of its full reservoir level (FRL) of 292 metres. The controlled release is expected to help manage flood risks and ensure downstream safety.
Reservoirs on Alert as Rainfall Triggers Heavy Inflows
With continued rainfall in the upstream regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, reservoir management teams are on high alert. The Tungabhadra dam, which feeds the Sunkesula reservoir, has been witnessing rising inflows due to monsoon rains, resulting in the decision to release excess water.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Srisailam dam officials to ensure smooth and safe handling of the floodwater.
