FM Nirmala Sitharaman To Present Union Budget On Feb 1
Delhi/Hyderabad, Jan 31 (Maxim News): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026-27 on February 1 (Sunday). This will be her ninth consecutive budget speech this year. This is an important milestone in India’s parliamentary and economic history. Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai previously held the record for presenting the most budgets (10).

This ceremony is a ritual. The Halwa ceremony marks the beginning of the budget lock-in period. This means that the officers and staff directly involved in the preparation of the budget will remain in the North Block until the annual budget (Budget 2026-27) is introduced in Parliament. They are not allowed to go out. They are always under the surveillance of CCTV cameras and security personnel. At least they are not allowed to make phone calls. The North Block houses the printing press that was traditionally used to print budget documents for 40 years from 1980 to 2020.
