Four Gates Of Srisailam Dam Lifted As Krishna River Swells

Srisailam/Hyderabad, July 8, 2025 (Maxim News): In a visually dramatic and spiritually symbolic moment, the crest gates of the Srisailam Dam were ceremonially lifted on Monday, sending a roaring surge of Krishna River waters downstream toward the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir.

The ceremonial release was overseen by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who offered special prayers to “Krishnamma”—the river goddess—before the dam gates were lifted. The ritual included offerings of turmeric, saffron, and sarees, symbolizing gratitude and reverence for the life-sustaining river.

Gates numbered 6, 7, 8, and 11 were opened to release water into the river in a controlled but celebratory manner. The Chief Minister also visited the Srisailam temple, offering prayers to Sri Bhramaramba Sametha Mallikarjuna Swamy before participating in the water release ceremony. He was accompanied by several cabinet ministers and Achampet MLA Rikdu Vamsi Krishna.

Floodwater Inflow and Reservoir Status

The Krishna River basin has been witnessing heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, particularly around Sunkishala and Jurala, resulting in a substantial inflow of over 1.70 lakh cusecs into the Srisailam reservoir.

As of Monday, the reservoir water level has reached 882 feet, just shy of its full capacity of 885 feet, according to dam officials. With increasing inflows, both right and left bank hydroelectric power stations are actively generating electricity, ensuring optimal utilization of the water and energy resources.

Impact on Nagarjuna Sagar and Downstream Areas

The release of water from Srisailam is expected to significantly benefit the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir and the irrigation systems downstream, supporting the ongoing kharif crop season in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Authorities have urged people residing in low-lying and river-adjacent areas to stay alert as the water flow in Krishna River will increase over the coming days.
