New Delhi, July 11: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following multiple consumer complaints alleging the supply of expired, spoiled, contaminated and otherwise unsafe food products through the quick-commerce platform.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Saturday, the food regulator said the notices were issued after examining complaints related to alleged food safety violations.
According to the FSSAI, consumers reported receiving products that were:
- Expired
- Spoiled
- Rotten
- Contaminated
- Unfit for human consumption
Among the observations, the regulator said eggs were allegedly marketed under a brand name that was not covered under the product categories approved in the company’s existing FSSAI licence.
The Food Business Operator (FBO) was directed to stop marketing the product unless it is covered under a valid licence and to apply for licence modification wherever necessary.
The notices also referred to complaints involving several food products allegedly supplied after their expiry dates, including:
- Healthify 100% Whey Protein (1 kg)
- Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts
In another case, an Akshayakalpa Organic Egg was reportedly found to be expired, rotten, foul-smelling and contaminated, making it unsafe for consumption.
The regulator also cited a complaint regarding Kakke da Paratha, which was allegedly spoiled and emitting a foul odour.
FSSAI further stated that an infant food formulation was allegedly found in a deteriorated and unsafe condition.
According to the regulator, even after the defective product was returned by the consumer, it was reportedly supplied again without adequate corrective action.
The authority also observed that no satisfactory corrective measures were taken despite the complaint being escalated.
FSSAI Seeks Detailed Compliance Report
The regulator has directed the Food Business Operator to submit a comprehensive explanation detailing:
- Reasons behind the reported violations.
- Existing food safety and quality assurance systems.
- Corrective measures taken.
- Steps proposed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
FSSAI has warned that failure to submit the required compliance report within the stipulated timeline could invite appropriate action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
