GHMC Launches Massive Tree Plantation Drive as Part of Vana Mahotsav 2025
Hyderabad, July 16 (Maxim News): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) kicked off its annual Vana Mahotsav celebration with a large-scale tree plantation drive, reaffirming its commitment to making the city greener and more climate-resilient.
The event was inaugurated at Shirdi Hills Colony in Kukatpally zone by GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Commissioner R.V. Karnan. Addressing the gathering, the Mayor highlighted that Hyderabad’s recognition as a “Green City” on the global stage comes as a result of consistent and dedicated efforts to enhance urban greenery.
Focus on Climate Action and Urban Sustainability
“Vana Mahotsavam is not just a symbolic initiative; it plays a vital role in tackling climate change, reducing pollution, and improving the quality of life in our city,” Mayor Vijayalakshmi said. She also added that GHMC plans to expand tree planting across all zones, aligning with the city’s growing green infrastructure goals.
Priority on Useful and Native Plant Species
Commissioner R.V. Karnan stated that GHMC is giving priority to useful and native plant varieties, which not only provide shade and improve air quality but also support local biodiversity. “We are determined to exceed our plantation targets this year, with strong community participation,” he said.
Zonal Commissioner Apoorva Chauhan, ACU BD Subhadra, and Director Venkateswar Rao, among others, also participated in the event.
A Step Towards a Greener Hyderabad
The GHMC’s Vana Mahotsav campaign is expected to involve lakhs of saplings being planted across public spaces, colonies, parks, and along major roadways. The civic body has called on residents, resident welfare associations, and schools to join hands in the mission to green the city.
With this initiative, Hyderabad is steadily progressing toward its goal of becoming a model eco-friendly metropolis in India. (Maxim News)
