Hyderabad, April 23 (Maxim News): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has launched a citywide QR based e waste disposal system to build a long term and self sustaining recycling network. GHMC Commissioner launched the new initiative at Happi and Big C electronic stores in Ameerpet on Thursday.
Officials said electronic waste poses serious risks when people dump it without proper handling. It harms sanitation workers and also damages the environment. Therefore, the Government of India classifies e waste as special waste that only authorised agencies can process.
GHMC said it has worked on e waste collection drives and awareness campaigns since January 2026. However, officials added that short term events alone cannot solve the growing problem.
As part of the new model, GHMC introduced three services for citizens across the city.
First, 30 drop boxes have been installed at retail stores including Big C, BNew, Happi, LOT, Sangeetha, Select and Touch. Residents can scan the QR code, locate nearby drop points and safely deposit unused electronic waste.
Second, GHMC is preparing a doorstep pickup service. Citizens will soon be able to request home collection through the QR system. Participating recyclers include Earth Sense, Recytronics, Pure Earth, Z Enviro and Green Enviro.
Third, GHMC will conduct awareness and collection events in different wards. Officials said these drives will educate people about safe disposal methods and the dangers of dumping e waste carelessly.
GHMC said citizens who complete a drop off will receive appreciation certificates and redeemable reward points. These points can be used at approved Self Help Groups, including outlets at Shilparamam and other centres.
Officials said the initiative will improve waste segregation at source, increase citizen participation, help track waste movement and reduce landfill burden.
GHMC also invited brands, volunteers and civic groups to join the programme and offer feedback to strengthen the system further. (Maxim News)
