Delhi / Hyderabad, Aug 7 (Maxim News): Customs officials at IGI Airport seized 869.5 grams of 24 carat gold from a passenger who allegedly concealed it inside an electric scooter.
The seizure took place on August 6, 2026, at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. The Air Intelligence Unit acted on intelligence inputs and passenger profiling.
The passenger had travelled from Jeddah to Mumbai and then to Delhi on flight 6E 6133. He carried household goods and an electric scooter in his checked in baggage.
During X ray screening, Customs officials noticed suspicious images in the passenger’s hand baggage and checked in baggage. However, the passenger did not trigger an alarm while passing through the Door Frame Metal Detector.
Officials then conducted a detailed examination of the electric scooter. The inspection uncovered gold concealed inside the solid cores of the scooter’s tyres.
Gold Hidden Inside Electric Scooter Tyres
Customs officials recovered 19 cut pieces of 24 carat gold from the tyres. The gold had a net weight of 869.5 grams.
Officials said the concealment method appeared designed to evade Customs detection. The gold pieces remained hidden inside the solid tyre cores during the passenger’s journey.
Customs authorities have booked a case relating to the alleged gold smuggling. Further investigation will examine the source of the gold, its intended destination and the passenger’s possible links to the smuggling network.
The seizure also highlights the role of intelligence based profiling and X ray screening in detecting concealed precious metals. In this case, the initial screening prompted officials to conduct a closer examination despite the absence of an alarm at the metal detector.
The Customs investigation will determine the applicable legal provisions and further action against the passenger.(Maxim News)
