Internet, July 15: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is reportedly planning to return to Bangladesh by December this year to revive the Awami League, according to sources close to her. However, a senior adviser to Bangladesh’s leadership has said she would face legal proceedings and could receive the death penalty if she returns.
Speaking at a media briefing, Zahid ur Rahman, an adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, said Sheikh Hasina was welcome to return to the country. However, he claimed that public sentiment strongly favored legal action against the former Prime Minister.
He said Hasina could hire the best lawyers from around the world to defend herself. He also stated that proceedings before the International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh would be transparent and open to international observation.
Rahman added that if the court accepted the legal arguments presented by the defense, the earlier death sentence could be overturned. He said the court could also acquit Hasina if it found her innocent after due legal process.
Sheikh Hasina has remained outside Bangladesh following political developments that forced her departure from office. Reports now suggest she plans to return later this year and strengthen the Awami League ahead of future political developments.
