Heavy Rain Alert: Northeast Monsoon Retreat in Telangana and AP
- IMD issues yellow alert for heavy rain in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Heavy Rain Alert | Hyderabad, Oct 14: The northeast monsoon has set in as the northeast monsoon retreats, bringing the season’s last spells of rain across parts of India, including Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Typically, this pattern appears from October to December and helps meet residual rainfall needs along the eastern coastal belts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and nearby regions.
Therefore, officials expect widespread rain activity as the northeast monsoon progresses over Telangana.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rain from today in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as the northeast monsoon advances.
Heavy Rain Alert
Meanwhile, the department has issued a yellow alert in Telangana for heavy rain, especially in Peddapalli, Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanamkonda districts. Also, officials indicated the remaining districts may see moderate rain during this spell.
In Andhra Pradesh, the alert highlights heavy rain for Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Palnadu, and Guntur districts, while the rest of the districts may receive moderate to heavy showers as conditions evolve with the northeast monsoon flow.
Then, as the system persists, more spells are likely, aligning with the usual October–December window that often delivers the last significant rains of the year in these regions.
However, intensity can vary locally depending on the monsoon’s intraseasonal pulses and convergence zones over the coastal and adjoining inland areas.
The northeast monsoon, locally referred to as the post-southwest monsoon phase, often supports water needs that remain unmet after the main monsoon season, particularly for the eastern seaboard.
Therefore, the current spell is significant for agriculture, reservoirs, and urban water management in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
With the yellow alert in place, residents in the listed districts should watch for localized flooding, traffic disruption, and waterlogging, and follow advisories from local authorities and the weather department.
