Hyderabad: Cyber Criminals Dupe Priest of Rs 6 Lakh in Puja Scam
Hyderabad, August 25: A 52-year-old priest in the city fell victim to cyber fraud and lost nearly ₹6 lakh in a fake puja offer. The incident occurred in the Old City area of puranapool.
According to police, the fraudsters posed as officials from the Secunderabad military office. They claimed that a senior army officer, referred to as “Colonel Sir,” was unwell and needed 21 priests to perform an 11-day ritual.
The criminals assured the priest that he would receive ₹3 lakh as advance payment and initially transferred ₹10 to gain his trust.

Later, they convinced the victim to share his debit card and PIN details during a video call, promising to send the remaining amount. Exploiting this information, the fraudsters siphoned off ₹5.99 lakh in multiple transactions.
Realizing the fraud, the priest immediately contacted the cybercrime helpline 1930. Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
