Hyderabad: Hyderabad-educated Telugu-origin lawyer Sandhya Reddy has been elected mayor of Strathfield Council in Sydney, Australia. She was elected by fellow councillors at the council’s September 29 meeting.
Reddy, popularly known as Sandy Reddy, became the 73rd mayor of Strathfield Council. She will serve as mayor until September 2028.
Reddy has built her public life in Australia over several years. She was first elected to Strathfield Council as a councillor in December 2021 and was re-elected in 2024.
She served as deputy mayor from September 2023 to September 2024. She returned to the position in September 2025 and continued as deputy mayor until her election as mayor.
From Hyderabad to Strathfield Mayor
Reddy has roots in Hyderabad and Telangana. She moved to Australia in 1991 and later established herself as a lawyer specialising in immigration and migration services.
Strathfield Council records state that she holds a Bachelor of Law, a Master of Anthropology and a Graduate Certificate in Migration Law from the Australian National University. She also runs her own education and migration services practice.
Before entering local government, Reddy was active in community service. Her activities have included volunteering with the State Emergency Service, supporting community initiatives and providing free migration services.
She was named Strathfield Citizen of the Year in 2020 in recognition of her community contribution.
Reddy’s rise in Strathfield local government has included several milestones. Her election as deputy mayor in 2023 marked the first time an Indian-origin councillor held that position in the council, according to reports at the time.
Following her election as mayor, Reddy said it was an honour and a responsibility to serve the Strathfield local government area. She said she would work with fellow councillors, council staff and the community.
Her election places a Hyderabad and Telangana-linked Australian community leader at the head of a Sydney-area local government council.
