Hyderabad Matrimonial Scam Doctor Duped Rs 1.1 Crore

Hyderabad: A woman doctor from the city was duped of Rs 1.1 crore in a matrimonial scam carried out by a man posing as a foreign national. Police said the fraud began in November 2025 after she created a profile on a matrimonial platform.

Soon after registering, she connected with a man who introduced himself as a foreigner. Initially, they exchanged messages on the app. Later, they shifted their conversations to WhatsApp. Over time, he gained her trust and told her he was planning a trip to India to meet her.

Customs call and false detention story mislead victim

Shortly thereafter, the doctor received a phone call from a woman claiming to be a customs official at Delhi Airport. The caller informed her that her fiancé had been detained for allegedly carrying a large amount of foreign currency in violation of regulations.

Believing the claim to be true, the doctor agreed to transfer money to secure his release. Therefore, she began sending funds as instructed. Meanwhile, the fraudsters continued to contact her with new demands.

GST, income tax and visa fees cited as reasons

Over the next four months, from November 2025 to February 2026, she was repeatedly asked to send money under various pretexts. These included payment of GST charges, income tax clearance, visa renewal fees and other legal expenses. As a result, she transferred a total of Rs 1.1 crore.

However, the fraud continued until the victim realized she had been deceived. Then, she approached the authorities and filed a complaint. According to police officials, the cybercrime wing registered a case and started further investigation to trace those involved.

Meanwhile, police once again urged citizens to exercise caution while interacting with strangers online, especially on matrimonial and social networking platforms. They advised people to verify claims carefully before transferring money to anyone.
