Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police have urged residents to exercise caution while hiring domestic workers, warning that negligence during recruitment has contributed to a rise in theft cases across the city.
According to police data, 565 servant theft cases have been registered in Hyderabad over the past two years. Of these, 65 were classified as grave offences, while 500 were non-grave cases.
Hyderabad Police urge mandatory verification of domestic workers
Police said IT professionals, students living alone, and senior citizens are the most vulnerable targets. The Jubilee Hills zone recorded the highest number of cases with 173, followed by Secunderabad (88), Khairatabad (77), Golconda (70), Rajendranagar (63), Shamshabad (49), and Charminar (45).
Investigators found that some criminal gangs from other states and even foreign nationals allegedly entered homes posing as domestic workers before stealing valuables.
To prevent such incidents, Hyderabad Police advised homeowners to complete police verification before employing maids. Residents have been asked to collect the worker’s Aadhaar card, photograph, full residential address, and details of previous employers.
Police also recommended closely monitoring newly hired domestic workers for at least the first month of employment.
For gated communities and apartment complexes, officials advised maintaining visitor registers, implementing entry pass systems, and ensuring CCTV surveillance is operational.
The police appealed to residents to immediately inform the nearest police station if they notice any suspicious activity or if a domestic worker suddenly leaves without notice.
