Hyderabad, April 19: A Hyderabad water misuse crackdown will begin from April 20 as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board steps up efforts to curb wastage during peak summer demand.
The special drive will continue for 45 days. Officials will act against misuse such as vehicle washing, sump overflows, and other non essential usage. Repeat offenders may face water supply disconnection.
Hyderabad Water Misuse Crackdown Targets Wastage
HMWSSB Managing Director K Ashok Reddy said the city is unlikely to face a major shortage this summer. However, he noted that reserves are lower at the Singur Reservoir.
The board is prepared to supply up to 600 MGD. Currently, about 570 MGD is being supplied due to issues in the Manjeera network. The government has permitted use of up to 8 TMC from Singur during ongoing repair works.
Meanwhile, emergency pumping systems are being readied to avoid disruption. Authorities said tanker demand has increased sharply. Trips rose from 1.08 lakh in January to 1.50 lakh in April.
High demand is reported from areas such as Durgam Cheruvu, SR Nagar, Kukatpally, Manikonda and Hafeezpet.
Out of 14.5 lakh consumers, around 48,000 frequently rely on tankers. Officials linked the rise in demand to falling groundwater levels.
On concerns about water colour, Reddy said there is no need to worry. He explained that seasonal changes are affecting water in Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. Measures are in place to ensure safe drinking water supply.
