Hyderabad’s Joint Capital Status Ends, Uncertainty Looms For Andhra Pradesh

The Act designated Hyderabad as a shared capital for ten years, after which it would become the sole capital of Telangana. However, the responsibility for the safety and security of citizens in the former joint capital region still lies with the Governor, as outlined in Section 8 of the Act.
While Hyderabad served as the joint capital, Andhra Pradesh established Amaravati as its legislative capital in 2015 under the leadership of then-Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. This arrangement continued even after Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy became Chief Minister in 2019, despite his proposal for a multi-capital system for Andhra Pradesh.

The future of buildings allocated to Andhra Pradesh’s administration in Hyderabad remains unclear. These include the Lakeview Guest House, which served as the Chief Minister’s Camp Office.
Political leaders have expressed differing views on the situation. Lakshminarayana, founder of the Jai Bharat National Party, criticized the lack of action on extending the joint capital status. Former PCC Chief Dr. Sake Sailajanath advocated for a ten-year extension of the shared capital arrangement. (Maxim News)
