India Closes Visa Centers In Bangladesh Amid Tension
- India closes visa centers after slogans against India
- Visa application centers shut in Rajshahi and Khulna
India closed two Indian Visa Application Centers in Bangladesh on Thursday amid rising security concerns and slogans against India. The government announced the closure of IVACs in Rajshahi and Khulna. The decision came in view of the ongoing security situation in Bangladesh. Officials said the move was necessary to protect staff and manage operations during the current situation.
According to a notification published on the IVAC website, the visa application centers in Rajshahi and Khulna closed on Thursday, December 18. The notice cited security reasons behind the decision. It also stated that all applicants who had already booked visa appointment slots would get another chance at a later date. However, the notification did not mention when the centers would reopen.
Meanwhile, security concerns have grown after the Indian High Commission in Dhaka received threats a few days ago. The situation became more serious after some Bangladeshi politicians raised slogans against India. In particular, a leader of the National Citizen Party made objectionable comments about the northeastern states of India. These developments raised alarm in New Delhi and triggered a strong diplomatic response.
Later, the Indian government reacted firmly to these incidents. It summoned the Bangladeshi ambassador in Delhi to lodge a protest. Officials conveyed India’s concerns over the safety of its diplomatic missions and staff. India also reiterated its position on bilateral ties. “India has always had good relations with the people of Bangladesh. We want peace and stability there.” At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs made its stand clear on security responsibilities.
The ministry stated that providing security to Indian embassies and staff in Bangladesh is the responsibility of the interim government there. Therefore, India expects effective steps to ensure the safety of its institutions. The closure of the visa centers reflects these concerns and the need for caution during the present situation.
Overall, the decision to shut the two visa centers highlights the impact of political developments and security threats on public services. While India underlined its desire for stable relations with Bangladesh, it also stressed the need to safeguard its diplomatic presence. More updates are expected as the situation evolves and authorities review security arrangements.
