The Union Government approved higher duties on select steel products following concerns over market disruption. According to official orders, the steel import tariff will be 12 percent in the first year. However, the rate will reduce to 11.5 percent in the second year. It will further decline to 11 percent in the third year. The move aims to shield Indian manufacturers from price pressure.

Meanwhile, authorities clarified that the steel import tariff applies to shipments from China, Vietnam, and Nepal. However, it does not cover special steel products such as stainless steel. Officials stated that the decision follows a detailed review of import trends and industry feedback.

Steel import tariff imposed after DGTR review

According to government sources, India has witnessed a sharp rise in steel imports over recent years. As a result, domestic producers faced declining margins and increased competition. India remains the world’s second largest crude steel producer. However, cheaper overseas supplies posed challenges for local mills.

Earlier, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies recommended protective measures. Consequently, the Centre had imposed a temporary 12 percent duty for 200 days in April 2025. That measure expired in November. Therefore, the government introduced a fresh steel import tariff after further assessment.

Officials said the policy ensures fair competition and quality standards. At the same time, they stressed that the tariff aligns with global trade norms. Industry representatives welcomed the decision, stating it provides stability and supports long term investment in domestic steel capacity.
