India semiconductor industry | New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s semiconductor industry is moving towards global markets as he inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.
“India’s chips will go out to the world,” Modi said while inaugurating the fifth edition of the semiconductor convention. He also called on global industry leaders to partner with India in building a complete semiconductor ecosystem.
The government has set larger targets under Semicon 2.0. The programme aims to support at least 200 chip-design startups and companies and develop one lakh semiconductor technicians and industry-ready workers.

Semicon 2.0 has been designed around six areas, including chip design, semiconductor equipment and materials, fabrication, advanced packaging, research and development, and talent development. The Union Cabinet approved the programme in July with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore.
Modi said India’s semiconductor ecosystem has expanded rapidly and is opening new opportunities for investment, innovation and growth. He also urged young researchers and industry leaders to contribute to advanced technology development in India.
The Prime Minister also marked the start of commercial production at CDIL Semiconductor’s facility in Mohali and Suchi Semicon’s unit in Palsana, Gujarat. CDIL has established an assembly, testing, marking and packaging facility, while Suchi Semicon operates an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility.
Modi said India’s semiconductor capacity has developed at a faster pace than that seen in several established chip-producing economies. He noted that semiconductor capacity in some other countries took decades to build.
India’s first semiconductor programme has already supported projects across the value chain. The government says five units have now commenced commercial production, while 24 chip-design projects worth about ₹900 crore have been approved. (Maxim News)
