New Delhi, Oct. 20: India will host the 61st meeting of the Committee on International Legal Metrology (CIML) in New Delhi for the first time from October 26 to 28, 2026. The Department of Consumer Affairs will organise the meeting in collaboration with the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).
The event is expected to bring together more than 100 international delegates, legal metrology experts and representatives from member countries and international organisations. Discussions will focus on measurement standards, fair trade, consumer protection and international cooperation.
India CIML Meeting to Focus on Global Measurement Standards
An international symposium on “Developments in Legal Measurement” will take place on October 26. Experts will discuss the digitisation of regulatory services, harmonisation of measurement standards, recognition of measurement instruments and e-learning tools.
An OIML Strategy Workshop is scheduled for October 27. Participants will discuss the organisation’s future priorities, technological developments, digital transformation and international cooperation.
During the three-day event, CIML members will also examine international recommendations, technical activities, the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS), capacity building and regulatory reforms.

The 60th CIML meeting was held in Paris on October 13 and 15, 2025. It included representatives from 55 member states, 12 associated members and five contact organisations. Discussions covered technical publications, certification systems and international cooperation.
India to Highlight Legal Metrology Reforms
The meeting will provide India with an opportunity to present its progress in modernising legal metrology. The Department of Consumer Affairs has introduced initiatives to simplify compliance, strengthen consumer protection and improve the ease of doing business.
Representatives from countries including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Australia, Switzerland, the United States, South Africa and Brazil are expected to attend. Associated members and international organisations are also expected to participate.

The discussions could help Indian manufacturers improve their understanding of international measurement standards, conformity assessment and OIML certification requirements. Greater harmonisation may also reduce technical barriers to trade and duplication in testing and certification.
For consumers, accurate measurements help ensure fair transactions and correct quantity declarations. They also support confidence in goods and services.
Founded in 1955, the International Organization of Legal Metrology is an intergovernmental body that promotes the harmonisation of legal measurement procedures. It develops recommendations and standards for measuring instruments used in trade, industry, healthcare, safety and environmental protection.
The CIML guides the OIML’s technical and administrative activities. Its annual meeting provides a forum for countries to discuss policy, technical developments and international cooperation in legal metrology.
