Accra/Hyderabad, July 3 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India will assist Ghana in delivering affordable and reliable healthcare through its successful Jan Aushadhi Kendra model. Addressing a joint press conference with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during his landmark visit to Accra, Modi said India is committed to supporting Ghana’s healthcare and pharmaceutical infrastructure.

“Through the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, India proposes to provide Ghana’s citizens with affordable healthcare and reliable care,” Modi said, highlighting India’s intention to replicate its low-cost medicine distribution network abroad.

The announcement comes as part of a broader move to elevate India-Ghana relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Focus on Healthcare and Vaccine Production

Modi and Mahama held extensive talks covering a range of sectors, including healthcare, vaccine production, fintech, defence, critical minerals, education, and agriculture.

“We discussed collaboration in vaccine production to improve public health outcomes in both our nations,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Modi’s emphasis on healthcare follows his domestic success with Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which provide essential medicines at significantly reduced prices to millions of Indians.

India-Ghana Ties Enter a New Era

PM Modi said the talks were “extremely fruitful”, and that both nations agreed to enhance cooperation across multiple domains, including:

  • Trade and economic partnerships
  • Skill development and vocational training
  • Defence cooperation and maritime security
  • Cybersecurity and critical mineral partnerships

“India and Ghana see immense scope in working closely in areas like defence, maritime security, energy, and agriculture,” Modi added.

Doubling Educational Support and Agricultural Cooperation

Modi also announced a doubling of ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghanaian students and professionals and pledged support in establishing a Skill Development Centre in Ghana. He expressed India’s willingness to assist in President Mahama’s “Feed Ghana” initiative, aimed at boosting the agricultural sector.

Solidarity in Security and Global Representation

Reiterating India’s support for Africa on the global stage, Modi praised Ghana for its cooperation in counter-terrorism and called for deepened mutual efforts in combating global threats.

“In the field of defence and security, we will move forward with the mantra of ‘Security through Solidarity’,” he said.

Modi also underscored India’s instrumental role in securing African Union’s permanent membership in the G20, calling it a matter of pride.

“In this journey of Ghana’s nation-building, India is not just a partner but a co-traveler,” Modi concluded, reaffirming India’s long-term commitment to Ghana’s growth and prosperity.

This visit marks the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit to Ghana in over 30 years, strengthening diplomatic and development ties between the two nations.
