At the sixth meeting of the India’s UAE Joint Committee on Consular Affairs in Abu Dhabi, both sides decided to work together on four main areas. These include liberal visa rules, better information flow, improved consular access and stronger cooperation on extradition and mutual legal assistance. The India Narrative report noted that officials reached an understanding on the need for predictable and long-term coordination. Meanwhile, they did not announce a new agreement, but the talks showed a shared goal to avoid slow and case-by-case responses.

India has recently expanded visa-on-arrival facilities for UAE nationals. The number of airports offering this option increased from six to nine with the addition of Kochi, Calicut and Ahmedabad. These airports support travellers linked to Gulf business centres and regions with large Indian communities. The UAE, on the other hand, widened its own visa-on-arrival scheme for more Indian professionals who hold foreign residence permits. Therefore, the changes make short-notice travel easier for both sides.

Both countries view simpler visas as essential due to strong economic ties. Bilateral trade has crossed about 100 billion dollars in 2024-25 under the CEPA pact. Officials say faster travel helps business meetings, project work and professional mobility. Later, they noted that movement for over 4.2 million Indians living in the UAE is also a major welfare concern. Easier visas for Emirati citizens entering India also signal equal focus on two-way travel.

On the security side, India and the UAE already have an extradition treaty. The recent talks focused on speeding up procedures without rewriting existing laws. This includes quicker review of documents and timely handling of extradition requests. Faster UAE cooperation can affect India’s efforts to bring back economic offenders who once saw Dubai as an escape route. Also, both sides aim to strengthen mutual legal assistance to tackle cybercrime, financial crime, terror financing and misuse of corporate structures.

Officials noted that deeper economic engagement between the two nations also requires faster sharing of financial records, ownership data and digital evidence. Therefore, improved mobility and legal cooperation are expected to support major investment plans and prevent criminals from using regulatory gaps. The talks in Abu Dhabi indicated a common intent to match economic progress with stronger cross-border legal action.
