New York, Sep 15: An Indian-origin woman died after jumping onto a New York subway track in an attempt to save a friend who had fallen onto the tracks. Both were killed after an approaching train was unable to stop in time, police said.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a Manhattan subway station while the two friends were waiting for a train. Police said Navam Kaul fell onto the track, after which Malaika Chitre jumped down in an attempt to rescue him.
The train operator reportedly told supervisors that there was not enough time to stop the train after spotting the two people on the tracks, according to the New York Post.
The incident was captured on video. The New York Police Department said detectives were investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Kaul and Chitre grew up in nearby towns in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University in 2024. Rajnikant Pipalia, who told the New York Post that his son was a friend of Kaul, said Kaul’s family had immigrated from Nepal.
Pipalia described Kaul and Chitre as part of the same South Asian social group and said they shared community events and festivals.
Media reports about the incident have also drawn criticism from Chitre’s family. Relatives reportedly objected to what they described as sensational speculation about the two friends and the circumstances of their deaths.
Chitre was pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy at Temple University while working as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Kaul, who held a business degree, worked as a data analyst at Bloomberg, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The NYPD investigation into the incident is continuing.
