Indus Waters Treaty Will Remain Suspended Until Pakistan Ends Terrorism: India

New Delhi, July 21: India has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty will not be revived until Pakistan takes credible and effective steps to end cross-border terrorism.

According to government sources, India maintains that the current security environment does not permit the restoration of the 1960 treaty. The Centre’s position comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, following which India announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

Government sources said the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan demonstrates a clear commitment to ending support for terrorism. They added that the decision was taken after due deliberations and reflects India’s national security priorities.

The Centre also clarified that the treaty has been temporarily suspended and not permanently terminated. Officials said that, as a sovereign nation, India has the right to suspend an international agreement if it is considered contrary to the country’s national interest.

Pakistan has repeatedly urged India to restore the treaty, citing concerns over water availability and alleging that the suspension has worsened its water crisis.

Rejecting those claims, Indian government sources said Pakistan’s water shortages are primarily the result of inadequate storage infrastructure, poor water management, leakages and internal distribution issues rather than India’s actions.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, governs the sharing of the Indus river system between India and Pakistan and has remained one of the longest-standing bilateral agreements despite periods of political and military tensions.
